How To Clean Oxidation From Your Headlights: 3 Methods

Your car headlights help you to see at night when driving, but if your headlights have yellowed or oxidized over the years, you may not be able to see quite as well. This can be dangerous for you and for anyone else on the road. You need your headlights to be clear so you can see properly and drive safely. You can have your headlights totally replaced, which may be costly, or you can clean your headlights to remove the oxidation. See below for tips on how to clean your headlights so they shine like new again.

1. Toothpaste Method

Here's What You'll Need:

  • Toothpaste (regular mint toothpaste)
  • Rag
  • Water

Instructions:

  1. Clean your headlight thoroughly to ensure you have all of the dirt and debris off of it.
  2. Squeeze some toothpaste onto the headlight and rub it in using a clean rag. Be sure you cover the entire headlight, and don't get any on your paint. Allow the toothpaste to sit for about five minutes, then rinse it off with clean water and wipe it dry with another clean rag.
  3. If your headlight is still a little hazy, repeat the process and use a soft bristle brush to gently scrub the toothpaste onto the headlight.

2. Mosquito Spray Method

Here's What You'll Need:

  • Deep Woods Off
  • Water
  • Clean cloth

Instructions:

  1. Spray the mosquito spray directly onto your headlight covering the entire headlight, being careful not to spray it on your car's paint.
  2. Rinse the spray from your headlight and wipe it dry using a clean cloth.
  3. Repeat the process if you still have some oxidation.

3. Wax/Sanding Method

Here's What You'll Need:

  • Wax
  • Sandpaper (both coarse and fine grit)
  • Water
  • Clean cloth

Instructions:

  1. Clean the headlight, then use the coarse grit piece of sandpaper with a little bit of wax to gently scrub your headlight (don't scrub in circles, it will leave marks, scrub in long lines). Tape around your headlight so you don't get sandpaper or sanding dust on your car's paint.
  2. Then, clean the headlight off using water.
  3. Next, take the fine grit sandpaper and some more wax, then gently scrub your headlight again in long lines (not in circles).
  4. Clean the headlight off using water again and then wipe it dry.
  5. Remove the tape around your headlight carefully.

New headlights may not be in your budget, so try these methods to clean the oxidation from your old headlights and drive safely once again.
